Parents are their child's first teachers. There are many things that you can do to help your young child develop his or her literacy skills. Here are just a few helpful hints.
- Volunteer in your child's classroom or school
- Communicate with your child's teachers on a regular basis.
- Make reading and enjoying books a part of your daily routine.
- Be sure your child completes homework and returns it on time.
- Turn off the TV and enjoy books together.
- Be sure to participate in parent-teacher conferences.
- Be a positive reading model by showing your child that you are an active reader.
- Talk about environmental print at the grocery store, in the car, or on walks.
- Sing songs and rhymes with your young child.
- Download educational apps geared toward literacy development.
- Share fun poetry.
- Use clay/Playdoh to make letters & words.
- Look for letters in everyday object (a wheel is the shape of an O, etc)
